Alexander Technique
January 30th, 2008
The Alexander Technique is a simple but very powerful re-education process that restores balance, posture and freedom of movement. The technique teaches the use of the appropriate amount of effort for a particular activity, giving you more energy for all your activities. It is not a series of treatments or exercises, but rather a re-education of the mind and body.
As we grow and mature, we tend to develop physical and mental habits that cause unnecessary tension. The Alexander Technique addresses these acquired bad habits by helping us return to a more balanced state, and in particular can help you relieve and manage your posture, back/neck pain, RSI, stiff joints, fatigue and other movement related problems. It can also help you perform skilled activities better such as sport, music and theatrical performance.
The technique is usually learned by taking a series of classes from qualified teachers. The number of lessons you take will depend on your particular needs and goals, and these can be discussed with your teacher. Learning the Alexander Technique involves changing long-standing habits, so improvement relies in part on your active participation.
