Biofeedback
April 7th, 2008
Biofeedback is a safe, non-invasive, painless, and effective useof instruments, now usually computerized, to provide continuous informationabout subtle changes in aspects of your body's functioning relatedto your symptoms.
Using special machines and sensors to record muscle contractions andskin temperature, you can learn to control normally involuntary processessuch as heart rate and blood pressure that increase under stress. The machine "feeds back" the efforts and both participantsand therapists use the information gathered from these machines togauge and direct the progress of treatment.
Once viewed with skepticism, the control of "involuntary"responses is now seen to be effective in the treatment of many typesof conditions including chronic pain, migraine headache and spinalcord injury.
