Bowen Therapy
February 1st, 2008
An Australian by the name of Thomas Bowen (1916-1982) developed a particular type of gentle manipulative technique and ran a very successful clinic in the 1970's. His work was developed and taught worldwide by the 1990's.
The Bowen technique is a holistic, hands-on therapy which, through gentle moves over muscle and connective tissue, allows the body to re-align, reset and heal itself.
Bowen therapists believe that the body has the ability to adjust, adapt and heal itself. Treatment is usually performed with the client lying on a treatment couch, and between each set of moves, the therapist will leave the room for a few minutes allowing the patient time to physically and spiritually absorb the work.
Bowen Therapy is not a typically ongoing therapy. In most cases, the patient can expect substantial relief after just the first treatment and complete recovery within 3 treatments, except in the case of chronic illness or repeated injury.
There are no known adverse side effects from this therapy and it is generally a pleasant and relaxing experience.
