Kinesiology
March 3rd, 2008
The word Kinesiology means the study of movement and was originally used to describe a field of science concerned with the working of joints and muscles. It should not be confused with various modalities of kinesiology.
Kinesiology encompasses human anatomy, physiology, neuroscience, biochemistry, biomechanics, exercise psychology and sociology of sport. The relationship between the quality of movement and overall human health is also studied.
However, in the natural health field, the term kinesiology is seen and used in a different way. Here, muscles become monitors of stress and imbalance within the body where 'Muscle Testing', the key technique in Kinesiology, is used as an effective and versatile tool for detecting and correcting various imbalances in the body which may relate to stress, nutrition, learning problems, injuries and so on. The muscle testing technique is fundamental to all the different types of kinesiology modalities.
Kinesiology has its roots in the early sixties with an American Chiropractor, George Goodheart D.C. Goodheart began to use muscle testing to evaluate muscle function, posture and general body imbalances. His continued research, which also included discoveries of corrective measures for the evaluated dysfunctions, led him to formulate 'Applied Kinesiology', a system he made available to other Chiropractors and professionals. His work was further revised and adapted by others. Many of the kinesiology methods taught and practices today bear little resemblance to Dr Goodheart's original approach. Differences in technique, scope and philosophy have created a broad range of organisations and practitioners of Kinesiology, which includes approximately 50 different styles.
