Myotherapy
April 19th, 2009
Myotherapy is a method for relieving pain based on the applicationof pressure at trigger points throughout the body. Trigger pointsare defined as hypersensitive locations in the muscles that causepain in response to undue stress. They may be caused by occupationalor other injuries as well as by disease, physical or emotional stress.Trigger points rarely occur in the same location where the pain isfelt.
Myotherapy is founded on the notion that relief of tension in themuscle followed by revitalization of the relieved muscle through stretching, promotes healing and reduces the inclination of the muscle and thenerve to cause further pain.
Myotherapy is effective for several musculoskeletal disorders suchas tendonitis, sciatica, back and neck pain, headaches, injuries causedby trauma, and much more. Myotherapy is also an excellent pain managementsystem that helps targeted health problems like chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, arthritis, and even scoliosis.
In the 1970's Bonnie Prudden, an American health and fitness practitioner, developed a unique form of physical therapy, which wasbased on the work of Travell and Simons. Dr Desmond Tivy was involvedwith Prudden's work from its inception and it was he who coinedthe term Myotherapy to describe this type of therapy.
