Osteopathy

March 5th, 2009

Civil War Surgeon Andrew Still, MD (1828 to 1917) founded Osteopathy on the principle that the best way to fight disease was by naturally stimulating the body's immune system.

Osteopathy is a system of health care that applies a unique philosophy to diagnosis and treatment. With a strong emphasis on the inter-relationship of the body's nerves, muscles, bones and organs, osteopaths apply the philosophy of treating the whole person (holistic approach) to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness, disease and injury using manual and physical therapies.

The most common complaints for which patients consult Osteopaths include back and neck pain, sciatica, headaches, pains in peripheral joints such as shoulders, knees and ankles, tendinitis and muscle strains, work-related and repetitive strain injuries, and sports-related injuries. Other conditions for which Osteopathy can play a significant role in reducing the severity of symptoms include asthma, gynecological dysfunction, arthritic conditions and chronic fatigue.

The Osteopath's job is to "set" the body up to heal itself. The main techniques used include:

  • Soft tissue massage
  • Manipulation
  • Muscle Energy Techniques
  • Articulation/mobilization
  • Nutrition
  • Stretching
  • Cranial osteopathy
  • Ergonomic & postural advice
  • Rehabilitation
