Hospital for Special Surgery Orthopedists Lead Symposium in India on Advances in Joint Replacement

January 14th, 2010

Orthopaedic surgeons from Hospital for Special Surgery, led by Chitranjan S. Ranawat, M.D., organized the eighth winter meeting of "Advances and Techniques in Joint Replacement Surgery," to bring world class orthopaedic surgery education to India. Four hundred Indian orthopaedic surgeons are attending the meeting in Kolkata, India, from Jan. 14 to 16, 2010.

"Teaching, education and research have always been important to me," said Chitranjan S. Ranawat, M.D., course chairman. "I have given my time and financial resources since the late 1980s to teach Indian orthopaedic surgeons through a fellowship program and continuing education courses. My team and I are proud to say that we have trained 45 orthopaedic surgeons through the Ranawat Orthopaedic Research Foundation. Ninety percent of them have returned to India to practice orthopaedic surgery," he continued.

Joining Dr. Chitranjan Ranawat at the meeting are his sons, Amar S. Ranawat, M.D., who presented on topics including complications of total hip arthroplasty, and Anil S. Ranawat, M.D., who presented on the future direction of robotic surgery. Both are assistant attending orthopedic surgeons at Hospital for Special Surgery.

Douglas E. Padgett, M.D., chief of the Adult Reconstruction and Joint Replacement Division and chief of the Hip Service at Hospital for Special Surgery, moderated the session on Imaging and presented on trends in infection treatment, among other topics. Hospital for Special Surgery has one of the lowest infection rates in the country.

The meeting was presented by Ranawat Orthopaedics and sponsored by Ranawat Orthopaedic Research Foundation.

Since 1986, the Ranawat Orthopaedic Research Foundation has supported orthopaedic research and education in the United States and Asia. With Dr. Chitranjan S. Ranawat as chairman, the foundation has united physicians and scientists in the goal of providing innovative clinical care.  In addition, the foundation has trained many orthopaedic surgeons in joint reconstruction surgery.
