Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month Underscores the Importance of Pediatric Rheumatologists
July 20th, 2010
Juvenile Arthritis (JA) is one of the most common diseases in children, with almost 300,000 in the United States diagnosed with the debilitating illness. However, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, there are 218 practicing pediatric rheumatologists in the United States – one specialist for every 1,376 patients. Nationwide, there are nine states without a single pediatric rheumatologist and another five states with just one. These numbers signify a need for increased access to trained specialists and important arthritis treatment advances that can significantly impact a child’s quality of life.
Although JA is common, it frequently goes undetected or misdiagnosed. Children and their families may have to travel long distances to seek treatment – 57 miles on average – adding to the $128 billion price tag that arthritis costs the economy each year.
"Early diagnosis of juvenile arthritis is essential," said John Hardin, M.D., vice president of research for the Arthritis Foundation. "There are treatments available today that if started early can prevent a lifetime of disability, and can limit the pain these children often experience."
"Advocating for federal support to train more pediatric rheumatologists is one of the Arthritis Foundation’s key goals – the national shortage is simply unacceptable," said Amy Melnick, MPA, vice president of advocacy for the Arthritis Foundation.
In an ongoing effort to help youth with JA and their families, the Arthritis Foundation recognizes Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month each July and works to promote programs and projects that bring attention to this over-looked disease.
- National JA Conference – The Arthritis Foundation will host its annual Juvenile Arthritis Conference in Philadelphia from July 29 to Aug. 1. Families of children with JA, arthritis researchers and healthcare providers, including pediatric rheumatologists, will gather to learn about treatments for this serious disease and to generate support to help overcome the obstacles for those affected by JA. This year’s Life, Liberty, & the Pursuit of Happiness patriotic themed conference will also incorporate a children’s parade, games and a family fun night.
- Juvenile Arthritis Alliance – The JA Alliance is a virtual community connected through the Arthritis Foundation website. Its members are parents, volunteers, health professionals and anyone who is impacted by juvenile arthritis. Learn more about the JA Alliance.
